Grab a fork and sit forward for a dark, but enchanting Iranian version, of a spaghetti western teen vampire flick. Languid, eerie and dreamlike, this beautifully stylised black-and-white film is more a tale of lonely souls lost in a dying city than it is a story of vampirism. A young woman spends her days listening to music in a tiny bedsit, her nights wandering the streets of the all-but-abandoned Iranian town 'Bad City', searching for appropriate victims. Meanwhile, a young man is slowly reaching the end of his tether as he struggles to support his ageing, heroin-addicted father, and a prostitute dreams of escaping her drug-dealing pimp. Tagged as “The first Iranian vampire Western,”A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is the debut film from Ana Lily Amirpour. Featured are the posters created as well as postcards and web art from the campaign.
The all go together to create a completely other world that's like our own but unlike it in many ways. David Lynch manages to pull that trick off but I hesitate to mention him as I don't want anyone to think this is an art piece that wouldn't suit a big audience. The set pieces like cars and clothes all echo a 50's vibe. And the soundtrack, well it matches, blends and drives the movie but also gives it a modern lift. This is absolutely a smart modern movie desspite looking like an older one in screenshots.

The cultural aspect of the film was interesting. This film has been overrated quite a bit. I'm not sure it is especially original.

For the most part, though, Amirpour helms the ship confidently and with a lot of love and care. Filmed in the desert in California, with an excellent Iranian ex-pat cast, "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night" introduces us to a sprawling yet interconnected cast of characters. They all live in Bad City, an Iranian town filled with bad bad vibes, surrounded by pumping oil drills, seen like galumphing prehistoric beasts, going up and down, up and down. But by her very nature, The Girl can never endorse or promote such ideologies—she can never be controlled, tamed, or contained. The film turns the symbolism of the veil on its head by bringing to the screen a chador-wearing vampire, with fangs and blood dripping down her mouth. She is at once bad, veiled, and sexual. Hybridity sits at the heart of A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. Just as the vampire figure occupies a liminal space between life and death, the film, too, exists in a liminal space. The Persian-language film is set in Iran but shot in America. This sense of in-betweenness also manifests in the film’s genre, which borrows from horror, spaghetti Westerns, coming-of-age stories, and even hints of comedy. And it extends to the filmmaker’s own diasporic identity as an Iranian American filmmaker. Interesting, a vampire movie set in Middle East, though it was shot in America.
Additionally, Bad City, the fictional location in which the film is set, may perhaps be a nod to Frank Miller's Sin City. Rockabilly, a gender-bending, minor background character who exists on the fringe of Bad City throughout the duration of the movie, acts as a silent observer to the events around them. Director Amirpour states that "If there's one political thing , it's not the chador, it's Rockabilly, because it's not okay to be gay in Iran." The film, without the constraints of censorship that normally govern Iranian cinema, challenges some of the Islamic Republic’s ideals. In the context of post-revolutionary Iran, it is femininity and women’s sexuality that must be tamed and controlled.

Echoes of the film are seen in the choice of shooting in black-and-white, the use of shadows, and the minimal dialogue. The film's dialogue is entirely in Persian, and the film blends elements of Iranian culture with the spaghetti Western-vampire imagery described above. A young, hardworking Iranian man named Arash lives with and takes care of his heroin-addicted father, Hossein. They are harassed by a cruel, drug-dealer pimp named Saeed, who seizes the young man's prized car in exchange for money the father owes him. In a crime of opportunity, Arash steals a pair of diamond earrings from the wealthy young woman he works for, Shaydah. Don't watch this film if you're looking for scares; it may be about a vampire but it's absolutely not a horror film and the pace is slow and melancholic; the dialogue is minimal but effective.
